How to Choose a Phone Repair Service
Every suburb has a "phone fix" counter, and they are emphatically not all the same. Your phone carries your banking, photos and identity; the person you hand it to matters. Here's the checklist we'd use ourselves — even if it sends you somewhere other than us.
The 7-point checklist
- 1. Real diagnostics, not guesswork. A good repairer asks questions, inspects the device, and explains what failed before quoting. "Yeah it's the screen, next" from three metres away is not diagnosis.
- 2. Part quality answered plainly. Ask what grade of parts they fit and what the options are. Evasive answers are the answer. Our poor-quality parts guide shows what bad parts do months later.
- 3. A warranty that means something. Warranty-backed workmanship, in writing, from a business that will still exist next quarter to honour it.
- 4. Firm quotes before work starts. The price you approve should be the price you pay. Surprise "extra faults" mid-repair are a classic squeeze.
- 5. Reviews with a pattern. Ignore the single one-star rant and the suspicious wall of five-star one-liners posted the same week. Read the middle: do repeated themes emerge about part failures, delays or attitude?
- 6. Data privacy taken seriously. Your phone should be repaired, not browsed. Workshops with clear handling policies, PIN-optional testing procedures and a fixed premises beat anonymous counters.
- 7. Capability depth. Can they go past screens and batteries — microsoldering, board repair, data recovery? Depth signals a real workshop; it also means misdiagnosed "unfixable" phones get second opinions in-house.
The red flags
No physical address. Prices dramatically under everyone else (the part is the corner being cut). No warranty terms anyone can point to. Pressure to decide on the spot. And any shop that powers your wet phone on "to check it" — see why that's disastrous.
