Phone Water Damage: What to Do First
Dropped your phone in water in Schofields? Whether it fell in a pool, sink, or puddle, what you do in the first ten minutes has more influence on whether it survives than anything done hours later.
Do these immediately
- Get it out and power it off. Electricity plus water is what kills boards, not the water alone. If it's already off, leave it off.
- Remove the SIM tray and let any water drain out of the ports, speaker holes and tray slot. Gravity is your friend, stand it port-down on a towel.
- Dry the outside gently with a lint-free cloth. Don't push cloth or tissue into ports.
- Get it assessed quickly. Corrosion starts within hours, not days. The sooner a technician opens it, cleans the board and dries it properly, the better the odds.
Skip these myths
- Rice does not fix phones. It dries the outside slowly while corrosion eats the inside, and starch dust makes things worse. This one refuses to die.
- Don't charge it "to see if it works". Applying power to a wet board is the fastest way to turn a saveable phone into a dead one.
- Don't blast it with a hair dryer. Heat drives moisture deeper and can damage the battery and adhesives.
"But my phone is water resistant"
IP ratings assume a new phone, intact seals, fresh water, and limited depth and time. Age, drops, previous repairs and salt or chlorinated water all void that assumption. Treat any dunking as a real event, plenty of "water resistant" phones fail days later from creeping corrosion while looking fine at first.
What professional treatment looks like

If corrosion has already claimed components, our microsoldering bench can often repair the board itself, and if the phone is beyond saving, data recovery is frequently still possible, which for most people matters more than the handset.
