Standard Xbox Series X/S (Model 1914) and Xbox One wireless controllers rely on dual carbon-film potentiometers soldered to the controller PCB via 14 through-hole pins per module. Every time you press L3/R3 to sprint or sweep the thumbstick, metal wiper contacts rub across a thin resistive carbon track. Once microscopic carbon dust wears away from the centre dead-zone, the voltage divider reports phantom movement to the console even when your thumb is off the stick.
