Phone Won't Charge: Finding the Real Cause
When your phone refuses to charge properly, the problem can range from compacted lint in the port to a damaged USB-C pin or motherboard charging IC. Residents in The Ponds can follow this diagnostic sequence to resolve charging faults.
The usual suspects, in order
- The cable. Cables die constantly and lie about it, they'll power one phone and not another. Try a different quality cable before anything else.
- The adapter and socket. Swap the wall brick; try another outlet. Cheap multi-port bricks are notorious for delivering less than they promise.
- A lint-packed port. Pockets stuff charging ports with compressed fluff until the plug no longer seats. If the cable feels loose or needs a wiggle to connect, this is likely it. A gentle clean with a wooden toothpick (never metal, never pins) often works, but go carefully; bent port pins turn a free fix into a repair.
- Software and temperature. Restart the phone; check for charging-optimisation settings pausing charge overnight; note that phones refuse to fast-charge when hot or very cold.
- The port itself. Worn or damaged connectors charge intermittently, only at certain angles, or not at all. Port replacement is a routine workshop job.
- The battery. An aged battery charges slowly, jumps percentages and dies early, the warning signs are distinctive.
- The charging circuit. When port, cable and battery all check out, the fault sits on the board: a failed charging IC or power-management chip. That's microsoldering territory, very fixable, just not at a kiosk.
Wireless charging its own beast
If cable charging works but the pad doesn't: reposition (coil alignment matters), lose the thick or metal case, and check the pad with another phone. Cracked back glass over the coil region also breaks wireless charging, covered in our back glass guide.
